SICILY. Syracuse. Second Democracy, 466-405 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 16.87 g, 8 h), circa 430-420. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVΡΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Head of Arethusa to right, wearing taenia; four dolphins around. Boehringer 631 (V319/R434). HGC 2, 1316. SNG ANS 201 (same dies). The obverse struck on a somewhat short flan, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Dr. D. Löer, formed since the 1970s, privately acquired from Frank S. Robinson (with original dealer's ticket but with incorrect further pedigree).
